When You Are Afraid of Bad News

September 3, 2026 • Leader: Dutch Sheets • Psalm 112:7; Isaiah 41:10

Reflection

Anxiety often asks us to solve the future before it arrives. Hope does something different: it brings the next fear, question, or uncertainty into God’s presence and asks for enough grace for the next faithful step.

Today’s focus is When You Are Afraid of Bad News. Peace does not require every circumstance to become simple first. It can begin when we stop rehearsing every possible outcome and place our attention on what is true, present, and entrusted to us today. The Scripture references for this prayer are Psalm 112:7 and Isaiah 41:10. Rather than rushing past them, take a moment to read them in your preferred Bible translation and notice what they reveal about God’s character, your responsibility, and the posture of faith.

Bring one specific situation to mind. Name the person, decision, fear, responsibility, or need that makes this prayer relevant today. Try not to make it larger than it is, but do not minimize it either. Honest prayer begins with reality.

Ask two questions: What is mine to do faithfully today? and What do I need to release because I cannot control it? Prayer becomes practical when it leads to a wise next step and a surrendered heart. You may need to make a call, ask for help, apologize, rest, seek professional care, create a boundary, review a decision, or simply wait without feeding fear.

God’s presence does not depend on perfect circumstances. Use this prayer as a starting point, then continue in your own words.

Prayer

Father, You know the thoughts that keep circling in my mind and the future I keep trying to solve. I bring my fear and uncertainty into Your presence now.

Today I bring You when you are afraid of bad news. You know the details I can explain and the parts I do not yet understand. Help me not to respond from panic, pride, resentment, or discouragement. Give me wisdom to see this situation truthfully and courage to take the next faithful step.

As I reflect on Psalm 112:7 and Isaiah 41:10, remind me that Your character is steadier than my circumstances. Shape my thoughts by what is true. Correct me where I am making assumptions. Slow me down where I am rushing. Strengthen me where I am tired. Show me where I need to ask for help, change direction, forgive, speak honestly, or wait patiently.

Protect the people affected by this situation as well. Give us grace to act with humility and clarity. Where there is pain, bring comfort. Where there is confusion, bring wisdom. Where there is conflict, open a path toward truth and peace. Where there is practical work to do, give us discipline to do it well.

Help me choose obedience over impulse and trust over the need to control every result. I place the outcome in Your hands while choosing to be faithful with what You have placed in mine.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
